Report for Tuesday 27.12.2022

The outstanding 2021-2022 Acorn Charity Invitation Shield Semi-Final finally took place at the Glebe, West Mersea, between Essex and Suffolk Border League Division Two side, Mersea Island and Essex and Suffolk Border League Premier Division side Belle Vue Social, at lunch time on a cold Bank Holiday Tuesday.

Mersea started brightly against their higher division opponents who had kicked off the match with only ten players, and inside the first twenty minutes cane very close to taking the lead with a header rebounding back of the bar to safety, and the Belle Vue keeper pushing another shot round the post before seeing another deflected shot just trickling past the wrong side of the opposite post with the Belle Vue keeper wrong footed.

With the missing eleventh Belle Vue player coming onto the field Belle Vue started to show their superiority and eventually took the lead in the twenty eighth minute when centre forward Sam Cripps was allowed a free run into the Mersea box before slotting home a right wing cross. Six minutes later Belle Vue went 2-0 up when left wing Dan Goodman was given total freedom at the back post to coolly shoot home.

The score line stayed that way to the break and for most of the second half, with Belle Vue playing controlled football and thwarting all of the Mersea attacks despite the flurry of Mersea substitutions.

Eventually belle Vue’s Jamie Ennew playing further forward broke free from the Mersea defence and his well taken eighty fifth minute shot found the back of the Mersea net for a final 3-0 score line to Belle Vue, who will now meet Tavern in the Final as yet to be arranged.

A good crowd of around fifty watched the match which was very well refereed by Referee Matt Jarvis and who was able to keep his cards in his pocket in what was a clean game played in the spirit of the Competition, which rases money for the Acorn Village Trust in Mistley supporting adults with learning difficulties.
